Educational Challenges for Afghan Girls

According to the Brookings Institute, gender inequality continues to be a significant issue within the Afghan education system.  Only 21% of Afghan girls complete elementary school, and even among these students most will not go on to secondary education.  These low enrollment rates can be attributed to the fact that the country formerly prohibited the education of women beyond the 6th grade.  As a result, Afghanistan has the world’s lowest female literacy rate at only 12.6% even though it’s been over a decade since the hardline Taliban regime was ousted from power.
