Phoolan was born into poverty in rural India in 1963. Her parents arranged her to be married to a much older man when she was just 11 years old. At only 12, she left her marriage after a year of violent assaults by her husband. Her parents considered this to be a disgrace, and Phoolan was ostracized by her family and her community.
Only a few years after surviving domestic violence as a child bride, Phoolan became entangled in local crime. Like many women in these unfortunate situations, Phoolan was constantly exposed to violence.
